Costumed Jaunt to the Seaside – UPDATE!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 16, 2016
12 noon to 5 pm
Jericho Beach, Vancouver

Vancouverites for Steampunk would like to invite everyone to a Vintage-Costumed Day at the Seaside on Sunday August 16, 2015!  Here is a map to find us! We will be on the sand at Jericho Beach – precise location will depend on where we can find an empty spot when I arrive. We will be to the West of the Concession stand, and to the East of Locarno Beach.  There will also be a 10×10 shade tent which you will not fail to miss once it’s up, as it will be Union-Jack-bunting bedecked.Jaunt to the Seaside_Jericho MapDon your vintage-styled or steampunk beachwear and join us on Jericho Beach to enjoy a day of vintage summery seaside fun!  You can select beachwear from any time between the mid-1800’s through the 1930’s. Spread the word to any costume-afficionados you know who might be keen for the excuse to try their hands at vintage beach wear! Keep in mind, if you’re worried, that, like now, it is always quite appropriate to also head to the Seaside in your “regular” period clothes – long dresses, skirts & shirtwaists, trousers and suspenders, etcetera. So steampunk, Victorian, Edwardian, ’20s or steampunk togs are also perfectly acceptable.  Ladies, you can even come out in your bloomers & chemise!

I have created a photo album in the Facebook group specifically for resource photos etc.

Alas, I cannot arrange a charabanc to get everyone to the site, but I have chosen a site accessible by car and public transit.  The # 4 bus will take you right nearby – get off at Wallace Street, the stop past the Alma Street stop.

Look for me in my smashing new get-up!
EdwardianSwimsuit_redIn the very unlikely event of inclement weather (constant rain) – I will post a cancellation notice on this website, on the Facebook event page and group page, and on twitter as @ClockworkDoor

Steampunk Comedy of Errors at Bard on the Beach

ComedyofErrorsThis year, Bard on the Beach has taken the radical step of steampunking a Shakespearian play – they are offering Comedy of Errors with a steampunk aesthetic on their Mainstage.  In advance of the play, I was contacted for an interview to help inform patrons and viewing public alike on what, exactly, steampunk was. The result is this interview on Bard on the Beach’s blog in March.

Subsequently I was able to dress up and went to see the show myself in early June, on the last night of the previews. What I experienced was a visual powerhouse which takes what is possibly Shakespeare’s silliest and least believable comedy, and turned it into a deliciously ridiculous and strong spectacle.

The premise of mistaken identities among two long-separated and unlikely matched pairs of twins is ludicrous to start with. So what better than to simply ramp up the ludicrous with all the spectacle, insanity, and darkness available in the colourful cloak of steampunk.

Mara Gottler’s extravagant costumes and Pam Johnson’s set of looming dark machinery enhance the thin plot and turn this into a play well worth watching, under the direction of Scott Bellis.

I highly recommend folks take this opportunity to see the hilarious, slapstick, yet darkly-envisioned result of one of Bard’s more experimental takes on a Shakespearian play. As of right now, there is still decent availability in August and September.

jaunt1Vancouverites for Steampunk would like to invite everyone to a Vintage-Costumed Day at the Seaside on Sunday August 16, 2015!

Don your vintage-styled or steampunk beachwear and join us on Jericho Beach to enjoy a day of vintage summery seaside fun! Unlike the United Kingdom, I think we can promise relatively warm waters! (No freezing by the North Sea!). You can select beachwear from any time between the mid-1800’s through the 1930’s. Spread the word to any costume-afficionados you know who might be keen for the excuse to try their hands at vintage beach wear! Keep in mind, if you’re worried, it was also quite appropriate in all these time-periods to also head to the Seaside in your long dresses, trousers and suspenders, etcetera. So steampunk, Victorian, Edwardian, ’20s or steampunk togs are also perfectly acceptable.  Ladies, you could even come out in your bloomers!

I have created a photo album in the Facebook group specifically for resource photos etc.
